Custom Stereo Install
Thursday, 04 March 2010 21:56

We did a custom stereo install in Daniel's ex-Volksworld featured '68 beetle. As stereo glovebox liners are presently unavailable, we fabricated our own headunit and gauge fascia from aluminium.

The glovebox of the bug is smoothed off to match the custom dash, so in keeping with the one-off custom theme of the bug, we made a fascia which would look right at home.

We modified the original glovebox liner which has previously been painted with fleck paint by cutting the rear out to accommodate the head unit body.

We made a template of the inside profile of the glovebox out of card then transferred it to aluminium.

The aluminium fascia was bead rolled and then polished up and featured tabs to locate the fascia to the glovebox liner so it stayed in place.

With the stereo neatly tucked away, along with a temperature gauge to keep an eye on what is happening out back, it certainly looks the part!

We installed two speakers in the footwells

And two larger speakers on the rear parcel shelf to finish the install off.

Make sure your firewall is screwed down, folks!
Thursday, 04 March 2010 21:43
While we were setting up Daniel's new VW Mexico engine, we discovered the cause of the previous engine overheating and blowing up. The aluminium firewall was not screwed down causing it to get sucked against the cooling fan at high revs, completely restricting any air from cooling the engine.
Those of you with aftermarket or custom firewalls, make sure you have fixed it to the bulkhead securely!

Daniel's Ex Volksworld '68 Comes In
Wednesday, 03 March 2010 22:08

Daniel dropped off his ex Volksworld featured '68 bug for a stereo install and a few other jobs. Unfortunately, the engine blew up on the way to our workshop, so we will be sorting a new VW Mexico 1600 engine for him.

Daniel1

We had dropped the engine and had a quick look at the case. It was seized solid and the crack on the top of the case indicated all was not good inside.

Further investigation revealed No.2 Con-rod had parted company with the crank and gone on a destruction rampage inside the case. New engine time.

New Walls Arrive!
Tuesday, 02 March 2010 22:28

Our new workshop and office walls arrived today! We're having the horrible asbestos side wall removed and replaced with insulated steel panels which will make things a lot warmer on cold days and cooler in the summer. It also means that our new office build can finally start to take place!

NewWalls

We immediately got stuck in and removed the old walls. The workshop seems to be a place of chaos lately!
